Seizures

What Are Seizures?

A seizure is a surge of uncontrolled electrical disturbance in the brain. It causes temporary abnormalities in a person’s behavior, movement, sensations, or level of awareness.

It can be tricky to understand how to help a person having a seizure. For starters, you may not always notice that they’re having one. A seizure may cause a person to twitch or jerk violently or fall to the ground, but it may also render them immobile or simply cause them to stare into space. It can last for anywhere from 30 seconds to a few minutes.

A seizure can either be a standalone event or be caused by any of a host of medical conditions. Theoretically, anything that disturbs the brain could lead to a seizure, including substance withdrawal, fever, meningitis, kidney failure, a stroke, or another condition. If a person has recurring seizures, they can be diagnosed with epilepsy

If you’re researching how to help someone with seizures, you may consider CBD treatments as a potential option.

How Do Seizures Affect Your Life?

There are three major types of seizures:

  1. Focal Onset Seizures
These occur in only one part of the brain, such as a single lobe, but can affect large areas. You may either be completely conscious and aware that something is happening, or it may affect your consciousness, leaving you unable to talk, hear, or move as you did before. You may also have no memory of the event.
  1. Generalized Onset Seizures
These seizures begin on both sides of the brain simultaneously. The symptoms can differ depending on the type of seizure you’re having. They include:
  • Muscle stiffening
  • Drooling or frothing
  • Sudden convulsions or muscle spasms
  • Rapid blinking or eye movements
  • Sudden limpness in the muscles causing a fall
  • Loss of muscle control
  • Loss of consciousness
  1. Unknown Onset Seizures
It can be difficult to figure out how to help with unknown onset seizures because no one witnesses the start of the event. For instance, you may wake up in the middle of the night and see your partner having one. This means that there may be insufficient evidence for doctors to diagnose the root cause of the seizure.

Medical Cannabis for Seizures

The most common treatments for seizures include prescription medications that can often cause side effects and sometimes be completely ineffective.

Research investigating how to help seizure patients who don’t respond to the traditional anti-seizure medication has pointed to medical cannabis as a possible solution. It’s believed to be able to significantly reduce the frequency of seizures in people. Moreover, studies show that the side effects of CBD treatment for seizures are fairly benign compared to those of conventional treatments.
